Nick Kyrgios appreciated very much Novak Djokovic siding with him and highlighting that some of the Australian’s comments about the Jannik Sinner doping case make sense.
The 29-year-old’s criticism of the handling of the Italian’s case is well-documented and there is no need to say much about that.
And when speaking to reporters at the Brisbane International over the weekend ahead of his post-surgery comeback, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist kept firm in his stance, slamming the Sinner and Iga Swiatek doping cases as “disgusting” and “horrible” for tennis.
Since Djokovic is also starting his season in Brisbane, local reporters used the opportunity to ask if he had any thoughts about Kyrgios scrutinizing Sinner and how his situation was handled.
“We live in a world where everyone has the right to express themselves, especially on social media,” the record 24-time Grand Slam champion said.
“Nick has spoken a lot about the whole Jannik doping case, and he’s right about the transparency and the inconsistency of the protocols and the comparisons between the various cases.
“We have seen many players in the past, and also currently, who have been suspended for not even having undergone anti-doping tests and for not having communicated their whereabouts, and some lower-ranked players who have been waiting for their cases to be resolved for more than a year.”
In his Brisbane presser, the Australian insisted that he would never take something prohibited and that’s why he is so mad when he sees someone failing a doping test.
Also, the 29-year-old added that he could have benefited a lot by taking something from the banned list during his post-surgery recovery – but he didn’t want to do that.
When it comes to Sinner, he has been refusing to get into war of words with Kyrgios so far.
