General manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, just made an interesting statement during a press conference.
As you probably already know, today was mid-season review day for the GM of the Habs, and he kicked off his media availability strongly, not hesitating to criticize certain players who aren’t meeting expectations.
We weren’t happy with the start of the season. Some individuals weren’t meeting expectations.” -Kent Hughes
It couldn’t be clearer.
I think he (Juraj Slafkovsky) is capable of doing more. I think he knows that. Are we surprised? No. I told him in the summer when we signed him that we expect him to have highs and lows. That his progression won’t be linear. He’s not alone in this situation.””I was talking to him yesterday. Since we’ve been here, the number of players that we’ve seen having difficult periods, (whether it’s Josh Anderson, Jake Evans, Sam Montembeault).. it’s the life of a professional athlete. The ones who are able to do consistently every year are very, very special players. I have lots of confidence in Juraj. He has work to do. You just have to keep your head down and work.”
– Habs GM Kent Hughes
The management wasn’t satisfied with the start of the season for some individuals, and we can notably think of names like Juraj Slafkovsky, Cayden Primeau, Justin Barron, and possibly Kirby Dach, although in Dach’s case, it can be excused by his long absence.
He is, however, doing much better recently.
Kent Hughes doesn’t hesitate to mention that certain individuals were simply not meeting the organization’s expectations
We can imagine that these individuals are playing much better recently, and it’s no coincidence that the team started winning afterward.
Let’s hope this continues.
During this press conference, Kent Hughes also spoke about the famous Ivan Demidov situation:

It’s therefore a relatively positive season review, but Hughes remains realistic and focused on the bigger picture.
He’s happy with the current good run but is well aware that there’s no need to get overly excited about it either.
