We have a last-minute development in the case of Sean Higgins, the driver who caused the deaths of brothers Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau.
Higgins was back before the judge this morning, and a new decision was made regarding his (non) parole release while awaiting trial.
The man who caused the deaths of brothers Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau will remain in prison
This is the breaking news.
He will therefore remain in prison for at least another full month.
Additionally, in light of this latest announcement, the defendant’s exact blood alcohol level was also publicly revealed.
Driver in crash that killed Johnny, Matthew Gaudreau had blood alcohol level of .087
It was reported that his exact level was .087 at the time the official sample was recorded by law enforcement officers.
He was indeed over the legal limit.
We also learned from the prosecution that the drunk driver was driving «at high speed,» even though the speed limit in that area was already quite (too?) high.
The limit in question on this rural road is 50 mph, where the terrible tragedy occurred, and both drivers of the two vehicles that Higgins dangerously passed stated they were driving at around 55 mph.
55 mph is about 90 kilometers per hour.
The prosecution therefore concludes that Higgins was driving very fast, way too fast, and that the Gaudreau brothers, who were cycling at the time, unfortunately had no chance.
Further details to follow.
