In a new documentary about the princes’ feud, which airs on ITV tonight, Omid Scobie said it was “no coincidence that William’s aides at Kensington Palace have launched a campaign against Harry, just a day after the Duke of Sussex appeared to confirm long-standing rumours of a rift with his brother”.

In 2019, as the Sussexes’ tour of South Africa drew to a close, Harry told ITV’s Tom Bradby that he and his brother were “on different paths”.

Also on the trip, Meghan revealed that she “exists, not really lives”, and at the same time criticized the royal family for being indifferent to her spirit and feelings. She added that “not many people ask if I’m okay.”

But after that world-stirring interview, Scobie claimed that reports that William was ‘worried about Harry’s mental health’ were deliberately sown by his staff – thereby sowing the seeds for further division between the two. However, the author does not provide evidence to defend these claims.

“I can say that it is no coincidence that not long after the documentary aired, there was information from a longtime assistant at Kensington Palace that William was worried about his brother’s mental health. That made Harry bad and it was really attention-grabbing. Whether William was the one behind the direction or not, no one will know, but that information came from the staff that he managed,” Scobie said.

In the documentary Harry & William: What Went Wrong? to be broadcast on ITV on Thursday night, Scobie – who has been an outspoken advocate for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – added: “Meghan has entered the royal family, is ready to work and this immediately makes others feel uncomfortable. As a woman in her 30s, I think she has proven herself and to the people she has worked with. By that time, Meghan knew what she was doing. She is definitely not someone who is willing to change herself just to please those around her.”

Harry’s sharing with Bradby in 2019 seems to be a confirmation of the suspicions of royal observers, that the two princely brothers who were once close are now separated.

“We’re definitely on two different paths right now but I’m always going to be there for him, because I know William will be there for me too,” Harry said. “We don’t see each other as much as we used to, but I love him and a lot of things happen for nothing. As brothers, you have good days and bad days.”

Tonight’s documentary is seen as “an attempt to get to the root of the royal rift” and “delves into allegations that many of the negative stories about Harry and Meghan are the result of instructions from inside the Palace”.
