A new court hearing has been scheduled for Erik and Lyle Menendez, the infamous brothers convicted of murdering their parents in 1989. The hearing, set for November 29, comes amidst the immense popularity of Netflix’s true-crime series “Monsters,” which dramatizes their story.

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón announced the new hearing at a press conference on Thursday. He revealed that new evidence has been discovered suggesting the brothers were allegedly molested by their father, Jose Menendez. This evidence includes a photocopy of a letter allegedly sent by one of the brothers to another family member discussing the abuse. Additionally, a member of the Menudo band has alleged being molested by Jose Menendez.

The new hearing could potentially lead to a retrial or resentencing of Erik and Lyle. However, Gascón emphasized that the evidence is still under review and no final decisions have been made. He acknowledged the ethical obligation to thoroughly examine the presented information and determine whether it warrants a reassessment of their case.

Erik and Lyle Menendez were sentenced to life in prison in 1996 for the murders of their parents. Their defense centered around claims of abuse and alleged sexual abuse by their father. Despite multiple appeals, their convictions have been upheld by various courts.

Netflix’s “Monsters” has sparked significant controversy due to its portrayal of the brothers’ relationship, which some viewers have found homoerotic and incestuous. The series has garnered immense popularity, with 19.5 million views in its first full week of availability.

The new hearing for the Menendez brothers comes at a time when their story continues to captivate the public. As the evidence is further investigated, the outcome of this case remains uncertain.
