Keith Urban Looks Back On Steamy ‘Playgirl’ Photoshoot

Keith Urban: Biography, Country Singer, 'American Idol' Judge

Keith Urban got his start as a musician in the 1980s. The Australian native moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1992 in seek of stardom. He admitted in a recent podcast interview that he would “do anything” to get his career off the ground, including posing for Playgirl magazine. Keep reading for more.

Why His Wife, Nicole Kidman, Isn’t His Muse

Keith Urban is one-half of a celebrity power couple. He married Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman in 2006 after a year of dating. They share two children, Sunday, 16, and Faith, 13. Despite his unwavering love of his wife, he revealed that not all of his songs are about Nicole Kidman.

The country star chatted with actor Rob Lowe on his Sirius XM radio show, Literally! With Rob Lowe. Keith Urban debunked the misconception that he writes all his songs about his wife.

“Oh, yeah. Yeah. People think everything I write is about her, and, of course, you know, a lot of things are and a lot of things aren’t,” the singer said. He added, “I mean, you know, I’ve lived a life. I’ve had other experiences, and, also, it doesn’t always have to be a personal experience either.”

He shared an example of a time when fans were upset about a song he wrote.

“I recorded this song called ‘Brown Eyed Baby,’ and I had X amount of people going, ‘Well, you can’t sing a song about a brown-eyed girl. I mean, she’s got blue eyes. She must’ve been so angry,’ and I’m like, ‘Not really.’”

Keith Urban Looks Back On Steamy Playgirl Photoshoot

Keith Urban is incredibly famous now,  but it took a while to get there. He was still an up-and-coming artist in 2001. He told Rob Lowe about a brilliant idea his record label had to gain attention: Posing in Playgirl magazine.

He’s hardly the first artist to pose for a racy magazine. Who can forget Dolly Parton’s iconic Playboy shoot? But the Australian native wasn’t familiar with the adult magazine.

“It was a guy at my record company who was like, ‘Hey, you know, we can do this article in Playgirl, and they’ll do a big, long, nice piece on the record,’ and I was like, ‘Great,’ and then we’ll go to a photoshoot too. I was like, ‘Oh, okay.’”

The country star joked, “Luckily, I play guitar and not harmonica.”

While the photoshoot may be embarrassing now, it definitely earned the country singer some new fans.
