The Toronto Maple Leafs landed Stanley Cup champion Steven Lorentz on a Professional Tryout, per Elliotte Friedman.
In breaking news, General Manager Brad Treliving signed Lorentz to a PTO, meaning that he’ll get a chance to take part in the training camp and show the coaching staff that he deserves a spot in the lineup.
The renowned insider Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the news:
Lorentz notably won the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers last season. In the regular season, he took part in only 38 games, being healthy scratched most of the season. He scored only three points, including one goal, during that time. During the playoffs, he had the same number of points, with two goals, in 16 games.
Here’s the goal he scored in the third game of the first round against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the last playoffs, giving his team a crucial two-goal lead with ten minutes remaining in the game:
He could be able to earn a spot on the Maple Leafs’ fourth line during training camp, but the battle won’t be easy. With Max Domi set to center the third line, and David Kampf the fourth, he will need to be at the top of his game if he wants to impress the coaching staff.
However, an interesting option emerged from a fan on X, suggesting that Lorentz could be placed on the fourth line’s wing, making the Leafs’ bottom line a real defensive menace.
Interestingly, Lorentz, a native of Kitchener in Ontario, brought the Stanley Cup to Waterloo this summer, and at the event, there was a picture of him as a kid, with a Maple Leafs jersey and the Cup next to the trophy.
