Blake Shelton Went to Extreme Lengths to Prove to Miranda Lambert That He Was Faithful

Blake Shelton once opened up about what his relationship with ex-wife Miranda Lambert was like.

Blake Shelton (L) and Miranda Lambert arrive at the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards at Staples Center.
Before Blake Shelton found the love of his life in Gwen Stefani, he was famously married to fellow country singer Miranda Lambert. At the time, Shelton did everything he could to prove his loyalty to his ex-wife.

Shelton tried offering Lambert full transparency when it came to their relationship. The two first met when they performed a duet together on stage in 2005. Both recalled feeling instant chemistry at the time.

“I’ve never had that kind of experience with anybody,” Shelton once said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

However, Shelton was married to Kaynette Williams back then, which made his immediate feelings toward Lambert harder to process.

“I was a married guy, you know? Standing up there and singing with somebody and going, ‘Man, this shouldn’t be happening.’ Looking back on that, I was falling in love with her, right there on stage,” Shelton said.

Likewise, Lambert was well aware of Shelton’s marital status, which complicated her feelings toward him.

“I knew he was married,” Lambert said. “I had seen their wedding picture in Country Weekly — I knew better, like, this is off limits. My parents are private investigators for God’s sake. I’ve seen this my whole life — affairs. Of all people to know better, I know better than this.”

But Williams and Shelton would divorce in 2006, making way for the “God’s Country” singer’s relationship with Lambert to bloom. After Shelton and Lambert wed, Shelton wanted to make more than sure the pair trusted each other. To further solidify Lambert’s faith, Shelton confided that nothing was off limits.

“I tell Miranda, ‘I have nothing to hide from you.’ That’s always been our policy: ‘Here’s my phone. Go through it,’” Shelton once said according to People. “That’s really the kind of trust we have. There are no secrets. I’ll say, ‘Go dig through my drawers or my computer if you feel like you need to.’ And that’s been a really good thing because I don’t want her to ever have any doubts.”

Shelton believed that kind of transparency only strengthened their marriage.

“It really is important to work things out all the way through, not just put a Band-Aid on it. I’ve got a way better handle on it. I know what her insecurities are and how to be there for her,” he said.

Blake Shelton’s divorce from Miranda Lambert inspired his song about an unfaithful lover

Shelton and Lambert divorced in 2015 after four years of marriage. Although neither gave any specific reason for their break up, there was speculation that Lambert cheated on Shelton and vice-versa. It’s still unclear if this was the case, but a source for E! News claimed the true reason for their divorce was their busy lifestyles.

“Their busy schedules were a big issue for them. They both worked a lot and had to spend a lot of time apart. The less time they spent together, the more they grew apart,” they said.

But what added further fuel to the divorce rumors was the song “She’s Got a Way With Words” off of Shelton’s album If I’m Honest. The song focuses on a fictional woman who causes heartbreak by cheating. Although Shelton didn’t write the song, many wondered if the record was really about his experiences with Lambert. Shelton would not confirm or deny the speculation, leaving the song’s meaning up to listener interpretation. But either way, he clarified that his divorce helped inspire the song.

“When we recorded the vocals for some of these songs, I was only six months removed from when all the crap went down,” Shelton said. “When you have a broken heart — at least, when I do — you got to get it out of your system. You want people to sympathize with you. I was at rock bottom, in the middle of hell.”
