Morgan Wallen Becomes The First Artist Since 1978 To Earn Billboard’s #1 Song Of The Summer Two Years In A Row
@postmalone
Like we said before the song was even released, “I Had Some Help” is the song of the summer.
And that’s not just my opinion…
Today, Billboard officially announced their “Songs of the Summer” top 10 list, which has Post Malone and Morgan Wallen taking the top spot with their mega hit and collab that was part of Posty’s debut country album, F-1 Trillion.
The song claims the title after leading the weekly chart all 14 weeks this season, which is based on the:
“Cumulative performance on the weekly streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day (this year encompassing charts dated June 8 through Sept. 7).”
Of course, last year in 2023, Morgan topped the chart with his solo song “Last Night,” which makes him the only artist in this century to earn Billboard’s #1 “Song Of The Summer” title two years in a row:
Billboard says that other artists with two summer triumphs (though not necessarily back-to-back), includes some elite company in:
“Drake, with ‘One Dance,’ featuring WizKid and Kyla, in 2016 and ‘In My Feelings’ in 2018; Katy Perry, with ‘I Kissed a Girl’ in 2008 and ‘California Gurls,’ featuring Snoop Dogg, in 2010; Jay-Z, as featured on Beyoncé’s ‘Crazy in Love’ in 2003 and Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ in 2007; Mariah Carey, with ‘Vision of Love’ in 1990 and ‘We Belong Together’ in 2005; and Usher, with ‘U Remind Me’ in 2001 and ‘Confessions Part II’ in 2004.”
In terms of artists who have accomplished it back to back, well, it’s been 46 years since Andy Gibb’s did it with “I Just Want To Be Your Everything” in 1977 and “Shadow Dancing” in 1978. He’s the only other one aside from Morgan.
The popularity of country music (and Morgan Wallen) in the mainstream clearly shows no signs of slowing down, and the fact that it so easily dominated the top spots two years in a row is proof of that. In all honesty, at his current rate and the fact that a new album is likely coming soon(ish), I wouldn’t be stunned to see Morgan at (or near) the top of this list next summer, too.
