Mike Tomlin will not stand for any comparisons to Lamar Jackson.
Tomlin said, “Man, be real slow comparing people to Lamar Jackson. That’s a multi-time MVP. That’s Mr. Jackson. We’ll see Mr. Jackson in a few days.”
Yeah, that’s fair. Jackson is on a level few quarterbacks can match. Frankly, he’s on a level few have ever matched given that he has won two NFL MVP awards. After winning the award last season, he’s on pace to be a finalist again this season. So far in 2024, he has completed 69.1% of his passes for 2,669 yards, with 24 touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s averaging a career-high 9.3 yards per attempt and has added 538 yards nad two touchdowns on the ground.
Daniels has had an excellent rookie season, but he’s nowhere near Jackson’s level yet.
The 7-2 Steelers host the 7-3 Ravens next Sunday.
Mike Tomlin Talks Jayden Daniels, Lamar Jackson Comparison After Steelers-Commanders
After defeating the Washington Commanders and rookie sensation Jayden Daniels on Sunday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked how the young quarterback compares to Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson, and he said there’s no comparison.
“Be real slow comparing people to Lamar Jackson,” Tomlin told reporters. “That’s a multi-time MVP. That’s Mr. Jackson. We’ll see Mr. Jackson in a few days.”
The Steelers limited Daniels to 17-of-34 passing for 202 yards and just five rushing yards with no touchdowns. It was his first time not scoring a touchdown since Oct. 20 against the Carolina Panthers, a game where he was forced to exit in the first quarter due to a rib injury. The last full game he played without scoring a touchdown was in Week 2 against the New York Giants.
For Pittsburgh, things are clicking at the perfect time. The team has won four straight games, including three straight since veteran quarterback Russell Wilson took over as the starter. At 7-2, the Steelers will look to remain in first place in the AFC North when they meet Jackson and the Ravens, who sit in second place with a 7-3 record.
Pittsburgh won both of its 2023 matchups against Baltimore, and it did so with Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph as its starting quarterbacks, respectively. However, Jackson only played in the Week 5 matchup and sat out the Ravens’ regular-season finale against the Steelers. In the 17-10 loss, Jackson was limited to 236 passing yards and an interception with 45 rushing yards and no touchdowns, so Tomlin knows how to slow down the two-time NFL MVP.
The Steelers and Ravens appear to be among the top contenders in the AFC this year, so next Sunday’s matchup will be an exciting battle between the two rivals.
