The New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres are the two remaining teams in the bidding war for Japanese baseball star Roki Sasaki, according to recent reports. However, the Yankees are confident that their offer will secure the 23-year-old pitcher’s services, as shared by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com on Baseball Night in New York on Tuesday.
“They think they do,” Hoch said, adding that New York’s history of Japanese stars, such as Masahiro Tanaka and Hideki Matsui, could appeal to Sasaki. New York also offers the bright lights of a major market, which could elevate his global brand.
Bryan Hoch also highlighted the New York Yankees’ history of successfully integrating Japanese players who have thrived in the New York environment. He suggested that for a player seeking a major market and a team with recognizable stars, New York could be an ideal destination.
“They’ve had a history of Japanese players who have come to the Yankees and enjoyed their time. There have been really recognizable stars. New York (is a good place) if you want to be in a major market that might be the place for you. One thing that gives me pause though is his agent talking about how a smaller market and the media may not be a good fit for him”. Said Bryan Hoch.
Roki Sasaki grew up idolizing Tanaka, which could give the Yankees a unique edge in their pitch. However, his agent, Joel Wolfe, has hinted that Sasaki may prefer a smaller market with less intense media scrutiny—a factor that aligns more closely with San Diego’s atmosphere.
Why the field has shrunk

The Padres present a strong case, thanks largely to Yu Darvish, who has served as a mentor to Sasaki. Darvish played a pivotal role in guiding him during Japan’s championship run in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, establishing a bond that could influence Sasaki’s decision.
San Diego offers the laid-back environment Wolfe suggested might suit Sasaki better than the media frenzy of New York. The Padres also boast a competitive roster and a track record of success in developing international players, factors that could tip the scales in their favor.
Bowden believes the Dodgers, Giants, and other rumored suitors are effectively out of the running. The Dodgers, despite their financial might, may not be the ideal fit for Sasaki. Sharing the spotlight with Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Los Angeles could limit Sasaki’s endorsement opportunities, a key financial consideration for a player who won’t reach arbitration for three years.
The Giants, with their weak farm system and middling major-league roster, are also unlikely to lure Sasaki. The Rangers and Cubs have been characterized as long shots due to their rosters and development systems.
With the Yankees and Padres emerging as the clear favorites, this high-stakes race feels like it’s nearing its conclusion.
Legacy vs. comfort

For Sasaki, the choice boils down to two compelling narratives. Signing with the Yankees would mean following in the footsteps of Tanaka and Matsui while playing on the biggest stage in baseball. The Yankees have already bolstered their rotation with the addition of Max Fried, but Sasaki could be the final piece to cement their status as World Series favorites.
On the other hand, the Padres offer a quieter environment and the mentorship of Darvish, which might better align with Roki Sasaki’s personality and preferences.
As negotiations reach their climax, both teams will need to rely on their unique selling points to win over Roki Sasaki. Whether it’s the allure of the Bronx or the comfort of San Diego, his decision will not only shape his future but also have a lasting impact on the MLB landscape.
For now, all eyes remain on Roki Sasaki—and the two teams vying for his generational talent.
