The New York Yankees are moving their cards on the table to sign and bring great players. According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, Willy Adames is under the Yankees’ radar in case Juan Soto leaves the clubhouse as a free agent.
Willy Adames as a contingency plan
MLB
As the Yankees navigate the offseason, their primary objective is to re-sign outfielder Juan Soto, who is anticipated to command a contract exceeding $600 million. However, with formidable competition from teams like the Mets, Red Sox, and Blue Jays, the Yankees are formulating contingency plans. One prominent alternative is free-agent shortstop Willy Adames.
Willy Adames, 29, is coming off a career-best season, hitting 32 home runs and recording 112 RBIs over 161 games. His offensive prowess and defensive versatility make him an attractive option for the Yankees, especially with the potential departure of second baseman Gleyber Torres. Integrating Adames into the Yankees’ infield would require strategic adjustments. Anthony Volpe, who has excelled at shortstop with consecutive seasons posting over 3.0 bWAR and a Gold Glove in 2023, could transition to second base to fill the void left by Torres. Alternatively, Adames has expressed willingness to shift positions for the right opportunity, potentially taking on a role at third base.
Juan Soto’s free agency status
The Yankees are among the frontrunners in the pursuit of Juan Soto, facing competition from the Mets, Red Sox, and Blue Jays. All four teams are reportedly willing to offer contracts exceeding $600 million. Agent Scott Boras recently stated that Soto is still evaluating his options, with a decision likely to come during the Winter Meetings next week. The Yankees, who traded for Soto last season, remain optimistic about keeping him in the Bronx.
By targeting Adames, the Yankees demonstrate their commitment to maintaining a strong roster regardless of Soto’s decision. Whether through free agency or internal reshuffling, the Bronx Bombers are determined to enter 2025 with a lineup capable of delivering postseason success.
