The New York Yankees are gearing up for a significant offseason, actively exploring their options in MLB free agency. While much of the spotlight remains on the anticipated decision of Juan Soto, the Yankees have started pursuing other top-tier talent on the market.
Yankees make strong case to Max Fried in lengthy Zoom call
SL
Notably, left-handed pitcher Max Fried has caught their attention, and initial talks appear to have gone exceptionally well. According to a report from Michael Kay on The Michael Kay Show this past Wednesday, the Yankees held a 90-minute Zoom meeting with Fried that was described as “very productive.” Kay revealed that someone close to Fried mentioned the southpaw “really, really” liked what he heard from the Yankees organization. Another meeting is reportedly already in the works.
Fried, 30, has spent his entire eight-year career with the Atlanta Braves, where he established himself as one of the league’s premier pitchers. Over 168 career appearances, including 151 starts, Fried boasts an impressive 3.07 ERA, a strikeout rate of 8.8 per nine innings, and 73 career wins. A two-time All-Star, Fried narrowly missed out on the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, finishing as the runner-up.
In 2023, Fried delivered yet another strong performance, making 29 starts with a 3.25 ERA over 174 1/3 innings. He tallied 166 strikeouts against 57 walks, marking his fifth consecutive season with an ERA under 3.50.
For the Yankees, Fried represents an enticing addition to their rotation. Adding a proven ace of Fried’s caliber could solidify a starting staff that already includes Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil. With Fried in the mix, New York would significantly enhance their ability to compete in a fiercely competitive American League.
Landing Fried would undoubtedly be a blockbuster move for the Bronx Bombers, and early indications suggest that their efforts are off to a promising start. If discussions continue progressing positively, Fried could soon be donning pinstripes, bringing both stability and star power to New York’s rotation.
As the Yankees navigate this pivotal offseason, the pursuit of Fried demonstrates their intent to build a championship-caliber roster, ensuring they remain a top contender in 2024.
