Juan Soto looks poised to beat Shohei Ohtani’s MLB-record 10-year, $700-million contract.
The New York Yankees and New York Mets upped their offers to Soto into the range of $710 million to $730 million with a decision potentially coming in the next day or two, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
It’s believed the Mets made the higher offer to the 26-year-old superstar, per Heyman.
There hasn’t been any indication the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers are out of the bidding, and it’s possible one of those teams offered a pact larger than the Yankees and Mets, reports Heyman, who adds it’s believed the Red Sox and Blue Jays made very competitive bids.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers have reportedly gone well north of $600 million in their attempt to add the 2024 AL MVP finalist to their star-studded roster and bolster their World Series-winning defense.
Soto posted a career-high 41 homers, 109 RBIs, .989 OPS, and 8.1 fWAR over 157 games last season en route to the Yankees’ first World Series appearance in 15 years. The four-time All-Star outfielder already has a championship ring from his time with the title-winning 2019 Washington Nationals.
