The Boston Red Sox need pitching help, especially elite starting pitching. The Sox were reportedly going to use Wilyer Abreu as the trade chip, but according to Red Sox insider Alex Speier, multiple major league sources have the Red Sox shopping Triston Casas now.
“According to multiple major league sources, the Red Sox have been open to using Casas as a trade chip for pitching help. An executive for one American League club said the Sox offered Casas as a headliner in talks about one of that team’s arms, withholding Wilyer Abreu and the elite prospect group”
This is surprising, as Sox CBO Craig Breslow said he had no plans on trading Casas. However, the Sox are getting desperate.
Since the beginning of free agency, they have lost two targets to other teams, Blake Snell and Willy Adames. They need to do something to make this offseason a success, and getting a pitcher would be the best option.
They would have to replace Casas at first as well. Whether it would be moving Rafael Devers to first or signing Pete Alonso or trading for Nolan Arenado, the Sox need to make a move first, and hopefully, they figure it out.
