As the offseason unfolds, the hot stove has seen some significant movement, yet the ripple effects of Juan Soto’s looming free agency decision have undeniably created a bottleneck. For teams like the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs, Soto’s choice could subtly influence their dealings, particularly with potential trade scenarios.
Among the players caught in this ripple effect is Cody Bellinger, whose name continues to surface as a potential trade target.
Reports indicate that teams missing out on Soto could pivot toward Bellinger, including the Yankees, who have maintained a long-standing interest in the left-handed slugger.
The Yankees-Bellinger Connection
The link between the Yankees and Bellinger is far from new. With Yankee Stadium’s inviting short right-field porch, the fit appears natural on paper.
While Bellinger’s power numbers have waned since his MVP peak, the Bronx could provide the ideal setting for a resurgence.
New York remains a frontrunner in the Soto sweepstakes, backed by a front office willing to spend big and the allure of landing arguably the best pure hitter in the game.
However, Soto’s market is fiercely competitive, and if another team edges them out, the Yankees may have to act quickly on a Plan B.
For Bellinger, that pivot could open the door to the New York Yankees.
As Bryan Hoch of MLB.com noted:
“There was buzz last winter about planting Bellinger’s left-handed stroke in Yankee Stadium, although that vanished after the Soto trade. Bellinger will earn $27.5 million this coming year, with a $25 million option ($5 million buyout) for 2026. Analytics suggest that his power would improve in the Bronx, and his center-field defense is rated better than [Aaron] Judge’s. He can also help at first base.”
Multiple scenarios in play
Interestingly, even if Soto lands in New York, Bellinger could still be in the Yankees’ plans. The team has a pressing need at first base, and should their free-agent options dwindle, Bellinger would stand out as a prime trade candidate.
His versatility in playing both the outfield and first base enhances his value to a club looking to reinforce multiple positions.
For the Cubs, Soto’s decision could indirectly shape their offseason. If the New York Yankees or other suitors forgo Bellinger in favor of Soto, Chicago might retain their star slugger heading into the season. Conversely, if the Soto domino falls quickly, a market for Bellinger could accelerate.
Waiting on the dominoes
The Chicago Cubs aren’t directly in the Soto conversation, but his decision will undoubtedly have ripple effects across the league. Teams recalibrating their plans post-Soto could lead to a flurry of activity, potentially altering Chicago’s roster construction.
One thing is certain: Once Soto announces his destination, the offseason will kick into overdrive, and Bellinger could find himself at the center of a whirlwind of trade talks.
