The New York Yankees are not expected to make a move for any high-profile players this offseason, according to Reuters. To complicate matters further, SNY reports that the Yankees are unlikely to pursue a notable name such as three-time batting champion Luis Arraez.
Why the Yankees won’t target Luis Arraez this offseason

Despite Arraez being a topic of interest across the league, his prospects of joining a New York team appear slim. While the Mets seem marginally more open to the idea than the Yankees, neither club has made substantial efforts. According to league sources, the Yankees briefly checked in with the San Diego Padres last November during preliminary offseason discussions. These conversations touched on Arraez, Jake Cronenworth, and other players but were general in nature and have not progressed since.
The Yankees are not expected to reignite talks about acquiring Arraez. Meanwhile, the Mets, though not actively pursuing him, could consider adding a veteran infielder, particularly if they face roster gaps. Should Pete Alonso sign with another team, Arraez might emerge as a stopgap option at first base, given his ability to cover other infield positions, albeit with below-average defensive metrics.
One significant hurdle in any potential trade involving Arraez—or other Padres players—is the uncertainty surrounding San Diego’s ownership. Earlier this week, the widow of late Padres owner Peter Seidler filed a lawsuit against Seidler’s brothers for control of the franchise. This contentious legal battle has created a cloud of uncertainty over the team’s short-term direction, making it difficult for rival clubs, including the Yankees and Mets, to gauge San Diego’s trade intentions.
While Arraez’s versatility and elite contact-hitting ability would undoubtedly bolster any roster, the Yankees appear set on exploring other avenues. As the offseason unfolds, the situation remains fluid, but for now, New York’s baseball landscape seems unlikely to include Luis Arraez.
