Over the weekend the Detroit Lions defeated some dubious NFL history by removing their name from the list of teams to never earn the No. 1 seed in their respective conference.
The Lions did so with a blowout 31-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night that saw the Lions win the NFC North, clinch the No. 1 seed in the conference and set the franchise record for wins in a season.
Star running back Jahmyr Gibbs kept his ridiculous run with David Montgomery out going when he totaled 170 yards and four touchdowns on the night, setting a Lions record for touchdowns in a season with 20 in the process. “We’re obviously having a better season this year, and I think everybody is still counting us out a little bit, so being able to shut them up a little bit feels good,” Gibbs told reporters after the game.
Not to be outdone, quarterback Jared Goff made some history of his own. He became the only quarterback in league history to complete at least 72% of his passes while throwing for more than 4,500 yards.
But he wasn’t done there. On Wednesday afternoon the Lions announced Goff broke the single-season record, previously held by Tom Brady, for most games completing at least 75% of his passes with nine.
After winning the division, clinching the No. 1 seed and earning a bye through the first round of the playoffs, Goff made it very clear the Lions have bigger things on their mind.
“It’s not the cherry on top,” he told reporters after the game. “Not yet.”
Detroit will get the weekend off before learning its opponent for the divisional round.
