JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jeff Ulbrich got away with one Sunday.
The Jets interim coach made a terrible time-management error, but it ended up not costing the Jets in their 32-25 victory over the Jaguars.
With the game tied at 25-25, Aaron Rodgers threw a 41-yard completion to Davante Adams that put the ball on the Jaguars’ 1-yard line with 1:08 left in the game after the Jaguars used their first timeout.
The Jets could have taken a knee three times, forcing the Jaguars to use their final two timeouts and then run the clock down after the third knee to about 15 seconds. They could have then kicked the game-winning field goal and left the Jaguars about 11 seconds and no timeouts.

Instead, Ulbrich called a running play to Breece Hall, and the Jaguars let him score a touchdown with 1:05 left in the game. The Jaguars got the ball back with two timeouts and 1:05 to go. They moved the ball to the Jets’ 47 before Mac Jones threw a game-ending interception to Sauce Gardner.
Ulbrich was asked after the game if he thought about taking a knee.
“I did, but at the same time I wanted to be aggressive there. I wanted the points,” he said. “They were having some success on offense. I wanted to put the nail in the coffin.”
Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers said punter Thomas Morstead asked him on the sideline why they didn’t just run the clock and kick the field goal.
“If we were 10-3, we probably would have taken two knees and kicked a field goal,” Rodgers said. “We’re 3-10. We were. I’m glad we went for it and put it back on the defense. I’m proud of them getting the stop there.”
Rodgers said he was hoping that Ulbrich would allow them to score the touchdown because it gave the Jets 30 points for the first time this season.
Rodgers led the team with 45 yards rushing. That is the second most by a 40-year-old player since the merger, trailing only Doug Flutie’s 53 yards in 2003.

“It’s been a long time since I led the team in rushing,” Rodgers said. “I take a lot of pride in my minimal athleticism. This is what I trained so hard for during those nine months, three to get back early and then the six to get all the way back. It was to be able to move around. Obviously, I feel a lot better. You guys know it. You’ve seen it the last few weeks.”
