During the Montreal Canadiens’ mid-season press conference, Kent Hughes addressed the topic of the possible arrival of Ivan Demidov this season.
Although some fans of the team were hoping to hear good news from the Canadiens’ general manager, Hughes’ first-round pick from last June will finish the season with SKA St. Petersburg.
In fact, as reported by insider Frank Seravalli, a new rule in the KHL dictates that contracts expire on May 31, leaving almost no chance of seeing the 19-year-old Russian prospect land in Montreal this season.
However, it could very well be that, in the end, this new contractual regulation will turn out to be a true blessing for the Canadiens organization.
Good news regarding Ivan Demidov’s contract in the KHL
As reported by the site HABSolumentFan, the fact that Demidov won’t play a few games at the end of the season prevents the organization from burning a year of his entry-level contract in the NHL.
This will give Ivan Demidov three full seasons to earn a very reasonable salary of around 1 million dollars, which could make him a real bargain if he quickly becomes a top-line forward with the Canadiens.
In 43 games this season with SKA St. Petersburg, the Canadiens’ first-round pick from the last draft has accumulated 32 points, including 14 goals, and was recently named Rookie of the Month in the KHL for December.
Canadiens fans are eagerly awaiting his arrival in Montreal for the 2025-2026 season.
