In spite of having the best record in the NFC, the Detroit Lions still have a fair share of doubters. That’s true for their star players as well.
Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown just had another fantastic regular season in which he put up 1,263 yards and 12 touchdowns. That performance not only earned him a Pro Bowl selection, but a First Team All-Pro nod as well.
No matter how good St. Brown may be, he has his detractors. Earlier this season, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens tried to shade him for being a “slot merchant.” Instead of responding publicly, St. Brown simply filed Pickens’ comment away for possible future use-as it should have been expected he’d do, whatever that would ultimately look like.
St. Brown was recently spotted wearing a previously unseen hoodie with the term “slot merchant” on it. Further investigation has shown he has the product available for sale via his online shop, in addition to a t-shirt with the term on it. The design depicts a slot machine with Lions colors.

While Pickens was trying to use the term “slot merchant” to belittle St. Brown’s talent and production. He should not be pigeon-holed as merely a slot receiver, but it is true that the “Sun God” has operated most comfortably there during his career. This season, that trend played out again.
After the final week of the regular season, Pro Football Focus writer Khaled Elsayed dropped a stat within an observation piece stating that St. Brown had seven touchdowns from the slot this season. That was tied for most in the NFL with Brian Thomas of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
No matter where St. Brown is operating from on the field, he is a special talent. This season, he caught 115 passes and had the highest touchdown total of his career while Pickens’ numbers were noticeably lower (900 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games). In more ways than one, St. Brown has gotten the last laugh in this situation.
