The pair have been accidentally married for more than 30 years

Hollywood legends Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder worked together on the 1992 film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and have remained close ever since.

But did you know they’re married? Well, kind of anyway!

You see, during the filming of the gothic horror – which starred Gary Oldman as the titular villain – their characters Mina and Jonathan Harker get hitched.

But their on-set marriage may have turned out to be a little more permanent than they intended.

During a 2018 interview, Ryder revealed that director Francis Ford Coppola had used an actual priest to perform the ceremony.

“We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life. In that scene, Francis used a real Romanian priest,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

“We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So, I think we’re married.”

Reeves later confirmed the speculation in an interview with Esquire, joking: “We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests.

“Winona says we are, Coppola says we are, so I guess we’re married under the eyes of God.”

But, while the pair have never been in a relationship in real life, they still call each other ‘husband and wife.’

While promoting her latest film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – a sequel to the 1988 horror/comedy Beetlejuice – Ryder said: “On his birthday, I’m always like ‘happy birthday my husband,’ and he’s like ‘hey wife, I love you.”

She also told host Josh Horowitz that while her relationship with Reeves is ‘so special,’ fans shouldn’t bet on seeing her in any upcoming John Wick sequels.

“If it involved a lot of stunts, I’m just thinking of my bones,” she joked.

But, the marriage between the two actors isn’t the only lore to come from the Dracula set.

In one scene, Dracula was meant to turn into a pile of rats, leaving Ryder’s character in tears. But on the day of filming, the actress just couldn’t get the waterworks going.

So, director Francis Ford Coppola brutally suggested that her co-stars should shout insults at the actress to make her cry and, himself, called her a ‘whore’. How delightful.

But when Coppola asked Reeves to join in, he apparently refused.

“To put it in context, I’m supposed to be crying,” she said. “Literally, Richard E. Grant, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu [Reeves]… Francis was trying to get all of them to yell things that would make me cry. But Keanu wouldn’t, Anthony wouldn’t.

“It just didn’t work. I was, like, really? It kind of did the opposite.”
