The return of the Quebec Nordiques continues to spark discussion, especially following the success of the Los Angeles Kings’ visit to the Videotron Centre.
Recently, an interesting twist emerged as it was confirmed that Gary Bettman, Bill Daly, and the NHL have received a concrete offer to bring the Nordiques back to Quebec.
An offer from none other than Luc Poirier, who disclosed this information himself.
Luc Poirier Opens Up About His Attempt to Bring the Quebec Nordiques Back

How Luc Poirier Tried to Buy the Coyotes.
In essence, on 98.5 FM, Luc Poirier revealed his genuine desire to see the return of the Quebec Nordiques.
As confirmed by Maxime Truman, via his podcast Stanley25 and through DansLesCoulisses (link below), Poirier indeed attempted to purchase the Arizona Coyotes.
«Luc Poirier has already offered $380 million USD to revive the Quebec Nordiques.»
In an interview on 98.5 FM, he shared the following, as transcribed by Zachary Hickling.
«Someone called me and said, ‘I could see you buying the Coyotes. They’re in deficit.’ They were losing $28 to $32 million annually. He said, ‘Look, if you’re interested, I can help with the transaction.’ At first, I wasn’t sure, but I found a bank to support me, and a Quebec billionaire joined me.
I got all the details, the last three years of financial statements. So, I spoke with the owners. I got the information. They were waiting for an offer or something from me. We were working with Bill Daly, Gary Bettman’s right-hand man, but my goal in buying the Coyotes was first and foremost to move them to Quebec. Otherwise, I considered moving them to Southern California, around San Diego.»
– Luc Poirier, who further mentions that around 8-9 years ago, the NHL had no desire to move the Coyotes.
They were looking for an owner who would keep the team in Arizona.
«I can understand them. They told me it’s the eighth-largest GDP market in America. Montreal is very, very, very far behind in terms of wealth. The NHL has always believed in the Arizona market.»
– Luc Poirier
This is indeed intriguing.
Clearly, the timing wasn’t right back then, but it’s interesting to know that someone like Poirier appears to have the resources (and the partners) for such a project.
More to come in the coming years.
Also, Max Truman reported it during his podcast:
»[Luc] Poirier tried to move the Coyotes to Quebec, he was ready to pay the $380 million that Bill Daly and Gary Bettman were looking for at the time, but they didn’t want them to move to Quebec, he would have to pay to keep the team [in Arizona]. Same thing with another team, he was ready to spend the $800 million, we don’t know who, but somebody came up with a better offer [likely the Seattle Kraken], but it is clear, they don’t want to go back to Quebec. I’m sorry, but this is the truth.»
