With a rather ordinary start to the season, the Canadiens will need to right the ship quickly if the organization wants to stay in the playoff mix.
However, if the team slips further over the next few weeks, Kent Hughes will shift into seller mode and evaluate his current roster to decide who might be next to leave Montreal.
On that note, as reported by insider Elliotte Friedman, three Canadiens players are likely to attract interest as the trade deadline approaches.
Three Canadiens Players Available for Trade, at the Right Price
Unsurprisingly, the players mentioned are David Savard, Joel Armia, and Christian Dvorak, all of whom will become unrestricted free agents next summer.
While many teams will show interest in the Quebec-born defenseman, it’s not likely that Armia and Dvorak are currently drawing scouts from other teams to the Bell Centre, at least not yet.
Both Canadiens forwards are off to rather ordinary starts, but they could increase their value if they manage to step up their game.
Another factor that could boost the value of the two veterans is the relatively shallow trade market this year compared to past seasons.
There’s still a lot of hockey to be played before the trade deadline in March, but unlike David Savard, from whom Kent Hughes could potentially get something interesting, there’s no expectation for a Sean Monahan-type deal that brought the Canadiens a first-round pick.
In short, this will be worth monitoring, and even if Kent Hughes wants to avoid it at all costs, it seems increasingly likely that Montreal will once again be in the seller’s category as the trade deadline approaches this season.
