Klay Thompson’s journey with the Golden State Warriors has ended after 13 seasons and four NBA championships. Drafted as the 11th overall pick in 2011, Thompson is starting a new chapter with the Dallas Mavericks, leaving behind long-time teammates Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
Kerr details why he expects Wiggins to excel this upcoming season
This season marks the first time in over a decade that Thompson won’t be part of the Warriors’ roster. Head coach Steve Kerr recently reflected on this significant transition during an interview with The San Francisco Standard, expressing his feelings about Thompson’s move to Dallas.
Kerr noted that there were signs Thompson was ready for a change. “I wanted Klay to be a Warrior for life; it felt like the right thing,” Kerr said. “But you never really know what the right thing is for someone else; only that person knows. By the end of the year, I think Klay knew he wanted to leave for his own sake.”
Kerr suggested that this change might benefit Thompson, saying, “Sometimes a late-career change can refresh and recharge you. I’m hoping Klay can move on from the injuries psychologically and emotionally, which I think he struggled to do here.”
In the 2023-24 season, Thompson averaged 17.9 points per game and shot 38.7% from three-point range, his lowest since his rookie year.
While these statistics are solid for a role player, Thompson still viewed himself as Stephen Curry’s co-star and faced challenges adjusting after losing his starting position.
Klay Thompson’s New Chapter With The Dallas Mavericks
Thompson’s move to the Mavericks comes with high expectations. He signed a three-year, $50 million contract and will join stars Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving.
Kerr highlighted the advantages of this new setup, noting, “He’s going to play for a great team with two high-level creators,” which should provide Thompson with plenty of opportunities for open shots.
Thompson expressed his excitement about joining Dallas during an interview with Dallas Hoop Journal. “I’m excited; it’s a whole new chapter of my career that has the potential to be really special,” he said.
He recognized how close the Mavericks came to winning the championship last season and stressed how important it is for the team to work well together: “We just have to stay together and build week by week. I know we can do something special.”

However, leaving Golden State is bittersweet for Thompson, who leaves behind a lasting legacy as part of the “Splash Brothers” alongside Curry.
Both players understand the necessity of this change, with Kerr noting, “Over the past year, Klay seemed at odds with the world… Now, as a Mavericks player, it seems that a new and bright start is possible.”
