The Montreal Canadiens have just made a significant announcement.
While everyone expected Samuel Montembeault to be in net tonight against the Washington Capitals, the organization has just revealed that Cayden Primeau will be getting the start instead. Wow.
Cayden Primeau Gets the Start Tonight, a Significant Opportunity and a Big Vote of Confidence from the Organization
This is a highly significant decision, especially if Primeau delivers a strong performance tonight, as it could clearly open doors for him.
Imagine if Primeau can string together 2-3 solid games in a row. Could we be looking at a new number-one goalie in Montreal? Either way, there are big questions on the horizon.
Personally, I would have really liked to see the Habs give the start to Samuel Montembeault to rebuild his confidence, get him immediately “back in the game,” and give him a chance to show his resilience.
I was genuinely curious to see how Samuel would perform tonight, to see how he would bounce back, but he’ll ultimately be watching from the end of the bench.
As for Primeau, this is clearly his chance to show he can be much more than just a backup goalie for the Montreal Canadiens.
What do you think of the decision?
Personally, I still believe Samuel Montembeault is the better goalie and absolutely should have been the trusted man in net tonight, but all the better if young Primeau proves me wrong.
It’s becoming risky for «Monty» because if Primeau wins tonight, it’s almost 100% certain he’ll be back in net on Saturday, giving him a real chance to eventually dethrone his teammate.
More details to come.
Primeau has appeared in 5 games this season, compared to Montembeault’s 7.
Primeau has a save percentage of 0.871 this season, while Montembeault has 0.891.
Primeau’s record this season stands at 1-1-1, compared to Montembeault’s 3-4-0.
Let’s not forget Sam’s reaction after being pulled against the Kraken, having allowed 5 goals on 10 shots:
