San Francisco 49ers superstar wide receiver Deebo Samuel has been hospitalized to have pneumonia treated, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced on Monday.

Deebo Samuel was questionable for the 49ers’ Week 7 home game against the Kansas City Chiefs with an unspecified illness. He started the game but was later ruled out due to the illness.

Per the 49ers’ official team Twitter/X account, coach Shanahan announced that Samuel has fluid in his lungs and a case of pneumonia. He is receiving treatment in the hospital, and his status for Week 8 against the Dallas Cowboys is unclear.

The defending NFC champions have been hit hard with injuries. Superstar running back and reigning rushing champion Christian McCaffrey has yet to play this season, and All-Pro wideout Brandon Aiyuk is out for the year after tearing his ACL against the Chiefs.

On top of that, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle is day to day with a sprained foot. So it’s possible that the 49ers will be without Kittle, Samuel and McCaffrey in what’s shaping up to be a must-win against Dallas.

In his first six games of 2024, Samuel has 20 catches for 335 yards and one touchdown to go along with 51 rushing yards and one rushing score.

We’ll provide more information on Deebo Samuel’s status when it becomes available. Here’s hoping he has a safe and speedy recovery.

Deebo Samuel Has Popped Up In Trade Rumors

Samuel’s name was widely mentioned in trade rumors during the offseason while GM John Lynch tried to secure a long-term deal with Aiyuk. Like Samuel two years ago, Aiyuk requested a trade before signing a lucrative extension.

The 49ers’ difficult cap situation could prompt Lynch to trade Samuel before the Nov. 5 deadline, not to mention they have 2024 breakout star Jauan Jennings and the promising Ricky Pearsall at wideout as well.
