D’Angelo Russell missed a crucial shot during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 114-131 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, which frustrated head coach JJ Redick. As a consequence, Redick benched Russell for most of the second half of that game.

This decision continued as Redick also left Russell out of the starting lineup for the next two games. However, this strategy proved to be effective, as the Lakers won both of those games. Despite the success, recent reports from Lakers insider Anthony Irwin indicate that the Lakers are internally concerned about Coach Redick’s decision to bench Russell.

“Sources say the players were somewhat surprised Redick went away from Russell as quickly as he did, but, through improved communication, Redick has been able to maintain better buy-in. It also helped that he did give that group a shot from the onset of the season. Some internally are still concerned about how Russell will handle this over time, which makes it all the more important the Lakers keep winning as they figure out this new approach.” Irwin wrote in his latest reports.

Russell was replaced by forward Cam Reddish and played off the bench in the last two games. Redick’s decision proved beneficial, as Russell performed well during this period. In the game against the Philadelphia 76ers, he scored 18 points, made three assists, and grabbed two rebounds. In the subsequent game against the Toronto Raptors, Russell contributed 15 points, one assist, and two rebounds while coming off the bench.
