The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly working on another blockbuster trade, despite already acquiring Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and edge rusher Josh Uche in separate deals.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are football’s last undefeated team with a 7-0 record heading into their Monday night showdown with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.
GM Brett Veach acquired Hopkins and Uche in a matter of days. Now, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the defending Super Bowl champions may be working on trading for a cornerback:
“The Super Bowl champion Chiefs have been aggressive on the trade market, and they might not be done. Kansas City addressed two needs with trades for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and pass rusher Joshua Uche in back-to-back weeks.
But cornerback remains a need after Jaylen Watson went down for the season, and the belief is that Kansas City is at least monitoring that market close to the deadline. The Chiefs are not pressed to make a move but will be open to it, and their 2025 draft haul is still in good shape after acquiring a third-round pick in the L’Jarius Sneed trade. The Chiefs also love retreads, players who know their culture, so it’s noteworthy that former Chiefs Marcus Peters and Steven Nelson are still out there on the free agency market.”
The Chiefs lost standout corner Jaylen Watson for the year with a broken tibia and fibula, leaving them shorthanded in the secondary. The 26-year-old emerged as a key starter following the offseason L’Jarius Sneed trade to the Tennessee Titans, recording six pass breakups in as many games before his injury.
The Kansas City Chiefs landed Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick, and Uche from the Patriots for a 2026 sixth-round selection. GM Brett Veach is no strange to in-season trades ahead of the deadline, as evidenced by the moves for wide receivers Kadarius Toney (2022) and Mecole Hardman (2023) that helped them to consecutive championships.
Kansas City will always be in win-now mode with Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid leading the way. And given Veach’s successful history of finding hidden gems in the later rounds of the draft, there’s every incentive to be aggressive for CB help again with a three-peat in sight.
Kansas City Chiefs Remain The Team To Beat
The Chiefs haven’t been dominating opponents on the scoreboard this season, but no team is more resilient and battle-tested than Reid’s group. They just know how to gut out wins in any fashion, good or ugly.
Kansas City remains the team to beat with the midway point of the season looming. And at 7-0, it already looks like the path to Super Bowl 59 will run through Arrowhead Stadium.
