Brittany Mahomes needs two things from the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes in order to make sure she can bring a WNBA team to Missouri as the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model chases after her dream of owning a franchise.

The 28-year-old mother-of-two already owns shares in the Kansas City Current in soccer and now aims to ride the wave of hype fostered by Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese by expanding into women’s basketball.

And with $90m in net worth and a contract to the value of almost $500m, they do have quite the war chest to chase after the goal of owning a WNBA franchise although it will set them back some $200m if they don’t bring any investors on board.

“We want to get basketball to Kansas City in general,” Patrick told reporters of their ambitions.

“And then WNBA. The city of Kansas City is going to come out and they’re going to fill the stadium.”

And for the quarterback, it isn’t just about expanding his sources of income by managing to acquire permission to own a franchise, it’s about sending a message to his youngest daughter that she can achieve whatever she wants to.

Mahomes’ face tough competition

However, they could face stern competition in the from of the NBA’s Jayson Tatum. The Boston Celtics’ star also aims to win a franchise contract from the WNBA, only he aims to take his team to St. Louis.

There, they would compete with the local fans against the Cardinals (MLB) and Blues (NHL) compared to the Royals (MLB) and Chiefs (NFL) for Kansas City, meaning at a glance they have a similar marketing power.

But Mahomes has a huge edge going in his favor in that KC itself is home to 511,000 people meanwhile St. Louis is home to around 275,000 people.

But that flips around when the metro areas are added. Greater St. Louis pushes the population up to 2.82 million whilst Kansas City remains almost a million people behind at around 1.73 million people according to the latest estimates for 2024.

Tatum could possibly foot the cash sooner than the Mahomes’ too. The NBA champion is on a $314m contact that he will earn in just five years, compared to the 10-year deal the NFL QB is on at the Chiefs.
