Get pumped.
The Cleveland Guardians upended the Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of the ALDS on Saturday and set the stage for another playoff matchup against the New York Yankees. The two sides will meet in the ALCS for their fourth postseason series since 2017.
The Tigers took the Guardians to the brink and were actually seven outs away from advancing in Game 4, but David Fry came through for Cleveland with a clutch home run and squeeze bunt to force a do-or-die Game 5. The Guards overcame the likely AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal and punched their ticket this weekend.
But for as magical as the Tigers’ run was in 2024, the Guardians will face the powerhouse Yanks next. Though New York has proven to be frustratingly underwhelming for stretches in 2024, the talent gap between them and Detroit is massive. The Tigers have a promising up-and-coming roster, but the Yankees have superstars and playoff stalwarts.
New York eliminated the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night and received extra days of rest as a result. The Guardians’ pitching staff has gone through it over that five-game gauntlet with their division rivals while the Yankees got some crucial time off for their overextended bullpen. Clay Holmes, Tommy Kahnle and Luke Weaver all played integral roles in getting the Yankees to the next round.
Shortly after the Guardians advanced, MLB released the entire ALCS slate, so get ready for action starting Monday night, Yankees fans.

We’ll be updating star times for Games 3-7 when they become available. Also, every game will be broadcasted on WFAN Sports Radio with the legend John Sterling taking you through the evening. As for the television broadcasts, Yankees fans can let out a sigh of relief: Bob Costas isn’t expected to be calling the ALCS. Instead, like last year, it will be the team of Brian Anderson, Ron Darling and Jeff Francoeur. Costas is indeed a legend, but it’s no easy feat to simply pop back into the booth and do play-by-play for a postseason series after not calling a single game all year long.
The NLCS will begin Sunday night at 8:15 p.m. ET with the crosstown Mets heading to LA for a seven-game series with the Dodgers. Subway Series in the Fall Classic? It’s possible. But the CS action will last for at least the next five days. Time to focus on the task at hand, with Carlos Rodón expected to get the ball in Game 1 for the Yanks against Alex Cobb of the Guardians.
