We just had a major development in the NHL, one that could have an immediate impact on the Montreal Canadiens.

It’s done.

The Boston Bruins have just fired head coach Jim Montgomery, and expect his name to come up a lot in Montreal.

For several months now, Montgomery’s name has been linked to the Habs, given his strong ties to Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.

Jim Montgomery fired by the Boston Bruins

See the official announcement.

This is a good time to revisit the following article: Jim Montgomery will coach the Canadiens one day, says Renaud Lavoie.

Personally, I don’t think Montgomery will replace Martin St-Louis, at least not in the short term, but I’m fairly convinced of one thing.

Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton will most likely, at the very least, contact him to offer him something.

Could he be the experienced mentor to assist the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens?

To be continued, but I can guarantee one thing. His name will come up a lot in Montreal media over the next few weeks.

His name was already circulating while he was still employed by the Boston Bruins, so imagine now that he’s a free agent.

Montgomery finished his time in Boston with a record of 120 wins, 41 losses, and 23 overtime losses.. and he was fired! It’s pretty incredible.
