After Saturday night’s game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Columbus Blue Jackets, journalist Renaud Lavoie highlighted an intriguing acquisition.

He’s not hiding it, he’s convinced the Habs should add the rugged Mathieu Olivier to their lineup next summer.

On TVA Sports following Saturday night’s game, the insider noted that Olivier will become an unrestricted free agent next summer, and Renaud Lavoie believes Kent Hughes should absolutely target him as a free agent.

A $2-million contract for Mathieu Olivier with the Montreal Canadiens? Renaud Lavoie just suggested it

Yes, Olivier is an excellent enforcer, as Arber Xhekaj saw last night, but he’s also enjoying an impressive offensive season.

«When Rick Nash joined the management team in Columbus, the first thing he recommended to almost everyone at the table was to dress Mathieu Olivier for every game to make the younger players more comfortable,» Lavoie shared.

Renaud Lavoie added that he’d be willing to offer Mathieu Olivier $2 million per year.

«I think it’ll be $2 million well invested,» he promised. «It will help Arber Xhekaj not always have to be the one doing the dirty work.

«I have this feeling he’d walk into the Canadiens’ locker room and immediately become a fan favourite, while also taking the pressure off Xhekaj to always be the sheriff.»

What about you? Do you like the idea?

Personally, I love it. I really believe this could be an interesting addition, especially since Mathieu Olivier is still in his prime at 27 years old and would get the chance to play close to home.

This season, he has 7 points in 17 games, including 5 goals, excellent for a bottom-six player.
