Though he no longer has his own Coach’s Corner segment, Don Cherry still keeps active with his podcast and the long-time analyst made a big decision about his future.
Known for his outlandish custom-tailored suits and brash attitude, Don Cherry endeared himself to millions of Canadians throughout the years, first as a coach before transitioning into an analyst role, turning Saturday nights into must-watch TV with his ‘Coach’s Corner’ program. Staunchly patriotic, Cherry got into trouble with some controversial comments, leading to his dismissal from Sportsnet and causing some fans to turn their back on Cherry.
Undeterred, Cherry continued with analyzing (and criticizing) through his podcast aptly named ‘The Don Cherry Podcast’. Having run in some variation since 2019, Cherry offers his thoughts and opinions of all things hockey, as well as answers any fan questions. For the 2024-2025 season, Cherry is still going strong, announcing his show will be returning he announced on X:
It will be a year of storylines for the man affectionately known as ‘Grapes’ as he will no doubt keep a close eye on both the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs; two teams Cherry is known to openly root for. He’s got plenty to work with since both teams have made some big changes (Toronto with Matthews named captain, Marner’s future; Boston with Swayman) and will no doubt offer his unique brand of outspokenness to the podcast world this season and it will be interesting to hear Cherry’s takes on the NHL this season as he approaches 91-years-old.
Cherry, who played in only one NHL game for the Bruins in his career, coached the team from 1974-75 until 1979-80 when he was fired, then picked up by Colorado Rockies for one year before a few AHL stints then quietly retiring to become a broadcaster. A Canadian icon, Cherry not only made his name in hockey but as an entrepreneur with his Don Cherry’s Sports Grill as well as lending his name to a series of highlight videotapes called “Don Cherry’s Rock ’em Sock ’em Hockey”.
