Andrew Garfield said he would return as Spider-Man if the role offered something unique and additive to the culture.
Andrew Garfield shared that he would return as Spider-Man only if the project is unique and culturally meaningful.
Andrew Garfield has expressed his willingness to return as Spider-Man if the role offers something “additive to the culture.” In an interview with Esquire magazine, the actor, who reprised his role in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, emphasized that any future return would depend on a “unique” concept. “For sure, I would 100% come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept… something that hasn’t been done before,” he told the magazine.
Garfield originally debuted as Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and returned for the 2014 sequel. However, the underperformance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at the box office led Sony to share the character with Disney, ultimately bringing Tom Holland into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Reflecting on his initial doubts about No Way Home, Garfield admitted he wasn’t sure Tobey Maguire would join. “I thought Tobey is not going to want to do that,” Garfield said, adding, “When I heard that he was kind of leaning in, I thought it was either going to be the greatest thing in the world or the worst thing… I am so grateful because it was the most joyful thing ever.”
Garfield, who remains open to returning as Spider-Man, acknowledged the lasting impact of the role on his career: “It brings joy… If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”
