Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin is currently in hot pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s infamous NHL scoring record.

Gretzky finished his career with a total of 894 goals. Coming into the season, Ovechkin was quite a ways away and most felt like it would take him a couple of seasons to get there.

However, Ovi has been on a tear to start the season as he has been scoring at an insane pace. He even had a hat trick a couple of nights ago against the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

On Monday, Ovi continued his dominant ways as he scored two goals against the Utah Hockey Club.

Now, he is 27 goals away from breaking the record and 26 away from tying. This is something he could do this season.

Unfortunately, there is a chance he might not be able to now. We say that because of a knee-on-knee collision with Jack McBain that took place in the third period last night.

Ovechkin was left on the ice in pain and he had to be helped off by his teammates.

Bad injury for Alexander Ovechkin

Following the game, it was revealed that Ovechkin was being looked at and that more would be known later today about his condition.

Hopefully, this is something that will not last a very long time. Although it is likely that he misses a couple of games.

During his hot pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s record, this was something that a lot of fans were nervous about. Ovi is 39 and it can’t be easy for his body to hold up for so long.

Having said that, Ovi is just 27 goals away from the record and he is 33 goals away from hitting 900.

The NHL is very eager to see him do it, and it really does feel like it is an inevitability at this stage.

We wish Ovi nothing but the best, going forward.
