Boston Celtics assistant coach Sam Cassell made a surprising revelation about Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese. Cassell appeared on the “Come and Talk 2 Me” podcast on Friday where he talked about the changes and the vision of the Celtics and his previous experience with Carmelo Anthony, among others.

During one segment, Cassell was asked about his thoughts on Reese and her contribution to women’s basketball and the WNBA. He shared his connection with Reese as they are both from Baltimore and Cassell said that she was “lazy” in her high school years.

“[24:20] Awesome, that’s my baby girl right there,” Cassell said. “Just watching her grow up through the ranks of Baltimore High School and seeing her now play the game of basketball, I thought she was so lazy in high school because she was so much better than everyone.”

Cassell added that she used to miss her layups in high school but rebounded. However, if the ball was turned over, she would not run back to defend. He then said that seeing Reese’s game now makes him proud that there’s another star from Baltimore.

Reese had a strong rookie season. She was the leader in rebounds for the majority of the campaign and was only passed after getting sidelined because of a season-ending wrist injury. She broke and set a new record for most double-doubles and most consecutive double-doubles in a single season.

However, despite averaging 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists, the Sky failed to clinch a playoff spot.

Sam Cassell reveals Angel Reese’s father’s battle with addiction and substance abuse

After Cassell praised the Sky forward for her achievement and growth in the WNBA, he revealed another surprising fact about the Reese family. Cassell talked about the struggles of Angel Reese’s father Michael Reese.

The three-time NBA champion said that he and Michael attended Pittsville Maine Central Institute together and talked about his fight against addiction.

“Michael Reese was a real real good basketball player,” Cassell said. “He could play, he was a very very good player you know, had some fallouts you know what I am saying, with addiction. But he is getting himself back together now.”

Cassell then gave a message to Michael and asked him to continue with his rehab. He added that whenever he talked to him, he tried to motivate him.
