The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Green Bay Packers organizations are mourning after the death of Calvin Jones.
Jones, who played running back at Nebraska from 1990-93, tragically passed away Wednesday.
The 54-year-old was found dead in his residence, according to KETV NewsWatch 7.
It turns out the terms of his death were even more heartbreaking as Jones was said to be having issues with his furnace and was subsequently forced to use a generator.
“A close family friend told KETV that Jones was having problems with his furnace, his home was cold and had to use a generator,” Jake Anderson wrote.
The police report added that officers would respond to Calvin Jones’ residence to help Omaha Fire with an odor of gas.
Omaha police told KETV that his death was indicative of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Calvin Jones Had an Incredible College Career That Led Him To The NFL
Calvin Jones tragically died on Wednesday as police responded to his home over reports of an odor of gas coming from the house.
He was found dead in the basement.
Before his untimely end, Jones racked up more than 3,000 rushing yards and scored 40 touchdowns during his time with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
His talent was immediate as he led the Big 8 Conference in scoring as a freshman before being named an All-American as a sophomore.
In the 1994 NFL Draft, Calvin Jones was selected by the Los Angeles Raiders, who moved to Oakland a year later.
He would only spend two years there and one with the Green Bay Packers.
In Jones’ lone season in Green Bay, the Packers won Super Bowl XXXI against the New England Patriots.
His career in the league never panned out as he finished his NFL career with 27 carries for 112 rushing yards.
