Former NFL star Warren Sapp is reportedly suing the Florida Police Department over a wrongful arrest claim.
Sapp, a pro football Hall of Famer, was arrested in Okeechobee, Florida, in 2024, apparently for no reason, and is now taking said department to task.
According to FOX Sports 640’s Andy Slater, he’s filing a $20 million lawsuit.
While details of the arrest were not made available, Sapp posted a video to social media showing the incident. The footage suggests that he and others had stopped to protest after the authorities pulled a young man over for speeding. It appears they believed that the driver was being falsely accused.
One of the officers asked Sapp to keep quiet, telling him he was obstructing justice. Sapp shot back by pointing out that he had freedom of speech and wasn’t physically interfering. The officer eventually lost his patience and put handcuffs on the former defensive tackle, letting him know he was being detained.
Warren Sapp’s Charges Were Eventually Dropped
The video doesn’t show Sapp committing any crimes, so it is unclear as to what he was arrested for. Slater also reports that the state attorney dropped the charges against Sapp a few days later, stating the arrest was illegal.
Warren Sapp spent 13 years in the NFL, making his name as a defensive star with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He spent the last four years of his career with the Oakland Raiders.
The 52-year-old helped the Bucs win a Super Bowl and was named a first-team All-Pro four times. He was also the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1999. A seven-time Pro Bowler, Sapp has been named to both the NFL’s 1990s and 2000s All-Decade Teams.
He spent 2024 working with the Colorado Buffaloes under Deion Sanders.
