Oprah Winfrey reveals ‘miracle’ half-sister

American TV chat show host reveals planned reunion with lost relative given up for adoption shortly after birth

Forget turning water into wine, the feeding of the five thousand, even the resurrection. The “miracle of all miracles” occurred last night, when Oprah Winfrey revealed she had a half-sister. According to Oprah Winfrey.

The television personality, who has reunited many a family on her chat show, revealed in advance of last night’s episode that she had a reunion of her own planned.

With fans appetites thoroughly whetted, they tuned in to see Winfrey unveil a long lost half-sister, named only as Patricia, who the pair’s mutual mother had given up for adoption shortly after birth.

Patricia had been searching to be reunited with her family for years, Winfrey said, before finally meeting the clan on Thanksgiving Day last year.

“I thought I’d seen it all. But this, my friends, is the miracle of all miracles,” Winfrey had said in a promotional spot for last night’s show. “I was given some news that literally shook me to my core. This time, I’m the one being reunited,” she said.

Last night it appeared Winfrey had stopped shaking to her core, although she was occasionally emotional as she told the story of how Patricia had discovered her roots.

Winfrey, whose own sometimes chaotic upbringing has been well-documented, was eight-years-old and living with her father when Patricia was born in 1963. Winfrey had not even known her mother, Venrita Lee, was pregnant, she said.

Lee gave up Patricia for adoption after the birth, but Patricia began to suspect she was related to Winfrey after she discovered details from her adoption papers matched-up with events in the chat show host’s life.

Patricia said she didn’t consider selling the story that she and Winfrey were half-sisters, preferring to break the news to her sibling herself.

“Family business should be handled by family,” Patricia told Winfrey in front of millions of viewers.

“It couldn’t be handled by anyone else. That’s not fair. It wouldn’t be fair to you.”

Winfrey’s late sister, also called Patricia, revealed to the press years ago that Winfrey had a baby when she was a teenager that died shortly after birth.

The late Patricia, who struggled with drug addiction, died in 2003.

Winfrey said she was heartened by learning that she had a half-sister, saying it “feels like closure” for the sister who died.

“It feels to me like you are Pat on her very best day,” Winfrey told the woman. “You are what she wanted to be without the drugs.”
