“He’s a woman too”- Diana Taurasi once made hilarious remarks on Geno Auriemma’s ‘mood swings’

Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi has been part of the league since 2004 and was with the UCON Huskies before that under the guidance of coach Geno Auriemma. The duo won three NCAA championships together and had great chemistry as seen from her remarks about Geno in a past interview.

A clip of Diana from the show ’60 Minutes’ has recently resurfaced on social media where she makes a hilarious remark on Geno’s “mood swings.”‘ The report centers around Geno Auriemma and was released on March 7, 2004.

The clip explores the coach’s personal life, philosophy and relationship with players and contains a segment featuring Taurasi. Asked if Geno understood women, Diana can be heard agreeing to the interviewer:

“He does, and you know we always say he’s probably a woman too. He’s got mood swings like a woman too. He’s got a little girl in him I guess.” Taurasi stated jokingly. (Start: 7:27)

Admitting that Geno understands women, Taurasi can be heard further explaining what makes him such a great coach:

“He gets in your head, he knows how to he knows what buttons to push to get what he wants from his players and sometimes you don’t like it.” she expressed

Geno Auriemma is the most successful coach in NCAA history and has won 11 NCAA Division I titles with the UCON Huskies. The 70-year-old has led his team to six undefeated seasons so far in his career and is arguably the greatest coach in college basketball across both the men’s and women’s games.

Diana Taurasi returned to the XL Center on November 20 as the UCON Huskies hosted the Farleigh Dickinson Knights. The Phoenix Mercury legend was there to witness her former team’s 85-41 victory with the win cementing Geno’s name in the NCAA history books.

This was his 1,217th victory as the head coach of the Huskies and the win meant that Geno broke Tara VanDerveer’s record for most wins in NCAA Division 1 history to become the winningest coach in the history of the competition.

Taurasi paid homage to her former coach after the game as many former players returned to Connecticut to honor their coach:

“I wanna thank you coach… You told me all the things I needed to hear. To make me a better person, a better teammate, a better basketball player. And all those little things day by day, week by week, month by month, you start building this confidence. As I see everyone here, whether we played on the same team decades apart, we always put this jersey on to represent you (Auriemma). Because we know how much you love this team, the game of basketball, and your family.” she expressed in a heartfelt speech.

Geno joined the Huskies in 1985 and has been at the institution for over 39 years, producing talents like Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart to name a few. Another one of Geno’s products, Paige Bueckers, is predicted to be drafted as the first overall pick during the 2025 WNBA draft, showcasing the coach’s longevity and experience.
