Despite Playing 0 WNBA Games, LV Aces Star Sells Out Virginia Tech’s Arena Upon Return

In sports, few stories can be compared to the story of a player’s homecoming, who brings success which is beyond the basketball court. That’s what is happening in Blacksburg, Virginia. Where fans are eager and willing to fill up Virginia Tech’s Cassell Coliseum and make it a thrilling night. The reason? A special ceremony for a Las Vegas Aces draft pick, whose influence is felt despite never stepping onto a WNBA court.

Elizabeth Kitley, who has not played an official WNBA game yet, was the 24th pick of the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Las Vegas Aces. Her path was changed after she tore her ACL in her last college game on the 3rd of March 2024, playing for Virginia Tech. Despite her injury, the reigning WNBA champions picked her up. Which was a testament to her talent and the ability to progress.

Interestingly, Kitley’s injury hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of fans or diminished her status as one of college basketball’s most accomplished players. In fact, it has heightened expectations for her professional debut, which is expected to be in 2025.

Kitley now returns to Virginia Tech for an unforgettable event—her jersey retirement. As for her legacy there, Cassell Coliseum sold out for her return. In a video message from Kitley showcased her gratitude, she said, “Hey Hokies, It’s Liz, I am so excited to be coming back home on January 19th for my jersey retirement. Thank you so much for supporting women’s basketball and for selling out Cassell. I’ll see you soon.”

During her five-year tenure, Kitley transformed Virginia Tech women’s basketball. She was a three-time ACC Player of the Year, breaking records, including becoming the league’s all-time leader in rebounds (1,506) and double-doubles (76). While her team was victorious in their first ACC regular season and tournament championships, the Hokies made history with a final-four appearance in 2023.

Kitley’s career in Virginia wasn’t only defined by team success. Cementing her place as program legend, she became Virginia Tech’s all-time leader in points, games started, and minutes played. Her performance transformed the Hokies from perennial underdogs to a basketball powerhouse.

In addition to her athletic prowess, she excelled academically. She graduated in human nutrition with summa cum laude honors. And was the recipient of Kay Yow Scholar-Athlete of the Year three times. For teammates and for future Hokies, her commitment to both education and basketball was inspiring. Looking at the future, she is now undergoing rehabilitation in Las Vegas.

A Promising future with the Las Vegas Aces

The Las Vegas Aces, who boast a roster of talent and have gone back to back on WNBA championships, drafted Kitley despite her ACL injury. As one of two maximum inactive players, the Aces reserved her contract rights through the 2024 season. The decision strategically gives her the ability to rehab in Las Vegas and under the Aces’ elite staff.
