After returning to the WNBA for the 2024 season, Chennedy Carter was reportedly “denied by USA Basketball,” according to Brazilian outlet Beta Basket’s founder, Roberta Rodrigues. In a post made late last month, Rodrigues revealed that the Brazilian Federation has been trying to make Carter a citizen to allow her to compete for the Brazilian National Team.

Although it’s nclear what connection Carter has to Brazil, in a post on her Instagram story on Tuesday she threw shade at Team USA. In the post, which included audio from rapper Don Toliver’s song Last Laugh, Carter shared a screenshot from an article discussing the possibility of Carter playing for Brazil.

Along with the screenshot, the Chicago Sky standout wrote:

“Denied by my country. Chennedy keep going. I will in due time.”

If Chennedy Carter were to be naturalized by the Brazilian government and become eligible to join the Brazilian National Team, she would join Chicago Sky teammate Kamilla Cardoso, who represented Brazil at the FIBA AmeriCup in 2021 and 2023, as well as the South American Championship in 2022.

As Beta Basket founder Roberta Rodrigues reported, the Brazilian National Team’s efforts to naturalize Carter have hit several obstacles. So far, the team has been able to bring over Seattle Storm assistant coach Pokey Chatman, who was previously an assistant coach for the United States.

Chatman is employed as a technical consultant with the team; however, according to Rodrigues, she will be taking over head coaching duties for the Brazilian National Team.

In the case of Chennedy Carter, while she hasn’t represented Brazil or Team USA professionally, she did represent Team USA in U18 and U19 tournaments as well as the PanAm games.

Because she hasn’t represented Team USA professionally, she could be eligible to represent Brazil at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if the team qualifies. Brazil failed to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer, placing the team under pressure ahead of the upcoming FIBA World Cup and Olympics.

As Rodrigues also reported, if Brazil can’t naturalize Carter to join the national team, the country would then find another player to naturalize to bolster their roster.

In the meantime, Carter is heading overseas to play basketball in China.
