Led by an impressive display from Courtney Williams, the Minnesota Lynx edged out the Connecticut Sun in Game 2 of the WNBA playoff semifinals on Tuesday. The former South Florida star stepped up on a night when the Lynx needed to pull off a win. Williams finished with a team-high 17 points, including some clutch shots in the second half. She also chipped in with five rebounds and four assists.

Playoff basketball can be intense and things got a little aggressive after a foul in the third quarter with Williams and Marina Mabrey involved in some trash talk. Neither player was willing to back down and the heated incident seemed to elevate Williams to another level. The Lynx guard was asked about their back and forth during her postgame interview and had the following response:

“Told her she couldn’t guard me. … I said so you think you crushing cause I am really crushing. … It’s playoff man, we going to talk a little bit. We will be cool again after we done playing.”

After the Sun took Game 1 of the series 73-70, this was a crucial game for the Minnesota Lynx. The home team took a six-point lead into the half but the Sun would not go away. Eventually, Cheryl Reeve’s side held on for a vital 77-70 victory to tie the series.

All-Star forward Napheesa Collier, the Lynx’s star player and leading scorer this year, had a rare off night on Tuesday, shooting just 3 of 14 from the field. That made Williams’ performance that much more special.

Over the course of the regular season, Courtney Williams averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists over 40 games.

Courtney Williams and Marina Mabrey have plenty of experience facing off against each other. The two veterans have combined for 525 regular season and playoff games since making their WNBA debuts.

Williams and Mabrey were also teammates with the Chicago Sky last season. The two players were instrumental in leading the Sky to the playoff where they were eventually eliminated in the first round against the Las Vegas Aces.

The Lynx will now travel to Connecticut for the next two games and the battle between these two former teammates promises to be an exciting subplot during this physical and intense playoff series.
