A’ja Wilson is a Gamecock through and through, and she celebrated South Carolina’s upset 44-20 win over Texas A&M on Saturday at the Williams-Brice Stadium. Wilson dropped a four-word reaction to the team’s viral locker room moment headed by coach Shane Beamer.

In an Instagram post on his stories, Wilson shared the viral locker room video featuring Beamer and his squad singing Fantasia’s 2006 hit “When I See U.” It was a gift by the South Carolina coach to his lovely wife Emily for her birthday.

“This is so cute,” Wilson wrote.

Coach Shane Beamer was wearing a huge Gamecock chain necklace when he decided to call her wife Emily. Beamer then requested his squad to sing along with him as a gift for Emily’s upcoming birthday.

But instead of belting out the “Happy Birthday” song, Beamer and his team sang “When I See U.” It’s one of Fantasia’s biggest hits released in 2006. Fantasia was the winner of the third season of the hit show “American Idol” back in 2004.

Beamer had a lot to celebrate after guiding the South Carolina Gamecocks to an upset win over No. 10 Texas A&M on Saturday night. Freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers had 244 passing yards and three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing). Sellers also had 106 yards rushing, while running back Raheim Sanders racked up 236 total yards and two touchdowns.

South Carolina improved to an overall record of 5-3 this season. Although the Gamecocks don’t have a shot at making the College Football Playoff, they can still make some noise with their upcoming games against Vanderbilt, Missouri and Wofford.

A’ja Wilson played for the South Carolina Gamecocks from 2014 to 2018, leading the team to the 2017 NCAA championship. Wilson holds at least 22 school records, including the most points in the program’s history with 2,389.

The Gamecocks announced last month that Wilson’s No. 22 jersey will be retired in a ceremony at the Colonial Life Arena on Feb. 2, 2025. It’s a symbolic date for the three-time WNBA MVP, who is one of the greatest athletes produced by the university.

In addition to being a Gamecock, Wilson is from South Carolina and is a hometown hero. She was born and raised in the state capital of Columbia and was a high school star at Heathwood Hall Episcopal. She was drafted first overall by the Las Vegas Aces in 2018 and has turned into one of the best players in the world.
