Due to problems of their own making, the Raiders lost yet again on Sunday.
A month ago, the Las Vegas Raiders were 2-2, and things seemed to be on the upswing with the franchise. Fast forward to present day, and the Raiders have now dropped four straight, and sit in the AFC West cellar at 2-6.
These three things are the biggest reason for the Raiders’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs this week.
Inability To Capitalize On Field Position
In the third quarter, as the Raiders trailed by just one score, they had multiple excellent chances to take control of the game. D.J. Turner returned a punt to the 43-yard line, and after being tackled out of bounds, a 15-yard penalty gave the Raiders the ball on the Chiefs’ 28-yard line. Shortly after, Tre’Von Moehrig grabbed an interception, and took it all the way back to the Chiefs’ two-yard line.
From both of those two chances, the Raiders came away with a combined three points. When playing a 6-0 team, you’ve got no chance if you don’t take advantage of those excellent opportunities, and the Raiders didn’t.
Poor Play-Calling
Yet again, the Raiders fell victim to a poor offensive game plan. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy scripted a great first drive, which got the Raiders into the end zone.
However, after that, things dropped off a cliff. Most notably, the Getsy choked up when the Raiders had their aforementioned goal-line chance. Getsy called four straight runs, including a bizarre Gardner Minshew QB draw on fourth down. At this point, we’re questioning his play-calling just about every week.
Inability To Get Defense Off The Field
The Raiders defense wasn’t necessarily bad against Kansas City. They kept things close for the most part, and put the offense in a solid position. The defense definitely can’t be blamed for this week’s loss.
However, they did struggle severely to get off the field on third down. Kansas City converted 12 of their 16 third down opportunities, good for a 75-percent success rate. That’s just not going to cut it, and you can’t expect to beat Patrick Mahomes when doing that poorly on third down.
