Village People are set to perform in “inaugural activities” for President-elect Donald Trump. Considering just how divided the nation is on this presidency, it’s no surprise they’ve had to defend this.
The program for Trump’s inauguration was revealed, confirming who would perform at which times in the inauguration. This has kicked up a storm on social media, as left-leaning fans threaten to boycott.
Although Village People aren’t on the program, Victor Willis announced their participation while the program went viral. Fans of both Village People and Underwood have had a lot to say about their apparent support for Donald Trump.
Victor Willis, however, stated his position that music is for everyone and that Kamala Harris was the band’s preferred candidate.
Writing to Facebook, Willis announced, “We are announcing today that VILLAGE PEOPLE have accepted an invitation from President-Elect Trump’s campaign to participate in inaugural activities, including at least one event with President-Elect Trump.”
“We know this won’t make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics,” he explained.
Village People To Perform For Trump Despite Them Not Supporting Him
You have to admire them for sticking to their beliefs about music being non-political.
“Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost,” he continued.
“Therefore, we believe it’s now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump,” he finishes.
Fans took to the comments to share their thoughts about the matter, and they were pretty divided.
“Congratulations! A well-deserved honour. The music has been claimed by many. So let’s enjoy it together,” one writes, echoing the thoughts of the post.
“You would think that as a band founded and focused around queer culture, you’d have a little more respect for queer people. not to mention a backbone, for yourself,” another criticizes.
