Tiger Woods’s $5,000,000 Event Goes Unnoticed by Rory McIlroy Once Again as Showdown With LIV Golfers Inches Closer
The Hero World Challenge is just around the corner and so is the excitement of golf fans, who eagerly await the return of the amazing tournament. Tiger Woods who is the host of the event has yet to confirm his participation due to ongoing health concerns. The 48-year-old recently underwent micro-decompression surgery on his lumbar spine to address a nerve impingement in his lower back, so it is very unlikely that he will be seen on the greens due to the recovery.
Meanwhile, the world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler who is the defending champion will be leading the initial commitment list of 17 players announced on Tuesday, per Hero World Challenge.com. Three spots still remain open for exemptions, one of which Woods filled last year. As the golf world waits with bated breath for Woods’s potential return, the Hero World Challenge is set to bring excitement this December. However, the fans got to know that another top golfer will also be absent from the Hero World Challenge and that’s Rory McIlroy.
However, unlike Tiger Woods, McIlroy’s absence isn’t due to health concerns or age-related issues, instead, it appears McIlroy has chosen not to commit to the tournament due to the upcoming made-for-TV match. One thing worth noting is the fact that McIlroy also skipped the 2023 edition of the Hero World Challenge, citing a hectic schedule. This year’s decision is followed by a challenging season which includes a heartbreaking collapse at the US Open.
Fans are spectating that one reason for Rory McIlroy’s absence from the Hero World Challenge could be his commitment to “The Showdown”. McIlroy will team up with Scottie Scheffler to face off against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka of LIV Golf on December 17, at Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas and he thinks the match is so much more than just a golf tournament.
Rory McIlroy sees “The Showdown” as a way for rival tours to come together
LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka will take on PGA Tour’s Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy in a made-for-TV 18-hole faceoff at Las Vegas this December. Rory McIlroy who was previously a vocal critic of LIV Golf, now supports unity between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf as he views “The Showdown” as a potential stepping stone for the ongoing merger talks, but again that’s a long shot.
The event is being organized by BZ Entertainment and airing on TNT, which will feature a Ryder Cup-inspired format. You all might not know but each player has a financial stake in the match and will be earning money from appearance fees and a cut of the commercial revenue.
“We wanted to create something exciting for golf fans…beyond the usual four majors”, he said, as he sees “The Showdown” as a potential catalyst for resumed merger talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. So, are you excited about the upcoming showdown? Let us know in the comment section below!
