Wait, what?
If you want to know just how shocked the NBA world (and even the rest of us) by the trade between the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers (and Utah Jazz, to be official) involving Luka Dončić, Anthony Davis, and other spare parts and picks, know that we’re talking about it on a Kansas City Chiefs site. That said, we’re only doing so because our beloved quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, is just as confused as you are.
As we all rolled out of bed on Sunday morning, the news was making the rounds that a late-night deal had indeed gone down to send Dončić (and others) to the Lakers for Davis (and others) with some help from the Jazz to make the deal official involving low-hanging fruit.
If you had to read the news more than once or check the veracity of the person who posted it in order to take it all in you’re not alone.
Mahomes is a noted Mavericks fan and he can be seen courtside when he’s got the free time. He also knows the sport well as a former basketball star himself in high school.
Back to the Dončić deal. While Davis is a talented player, he’s also seven years older than Dončić and, together with Kyrie Irving, the Mavericks are now going forward with two aging stars to lean on rather than enjoying the prime of Dončić’s career as a homegrown player and future Hall of Famer. It felt like a gift of a deal, and it’s hard to even think of an NFL equivalent.
There are luxury tax considerations here for the teams involved, of course, and the Mavs will lay out their reasons in the days to come. That said, for now, confusion is the name of the game. That’s why Mahomes was quick to post the following:
Further processing only led to more grief at the loss of Doncic.
Eventually, Mahomes found a happy place, showing he’s progressed through the stages of grief about as quickly as anyone could ever make it. After the initial denial and anger came some depression. Ultimately, acceptance could be found in his final post on the subject.
Let’s just hope Brett Veach isn’t inspired by anything the Mavs are doing these days.
