Miami Hurricanes 38, Virginia Tech Hokies 34 – Suffice it to say the Miami Hurricanes were lucky to emerge with a thrilling win over the Virginia Tech Hokies Thursday night, as it was more or less gifted to them in the final drama of the contest.
A touchdown call – one which came after review – brought back on the field a play that seemed at one point to seal the game for Virginia Tech in dramatic fashion, as they trailed Miami by four points and then had what appeared to be a last-second touchdown taken away from them.
The Controversial Call that Changed the Game
In the final seconds, Virginia Tech quarterback Kyrone Drones threw a last-ditch Hail Mary pass into the end zone where wide receiver Da’Quon Felton made a miraculous catch. Initially called a touchdown, the Hokie faithful erupted in celebration, believing they had pulled off the most impressive upset in the history of the college game. But the victory was short-lived.
They froze the game to automatically review the play for a score, which is the protocol. The officials chose after much consideration to reverse their decision because they had logically come to a reason that Felton did not have possession of the football at all points in the catch. There was a huge commotion in the stadium and Virginia Tech fans were outraged feeling that it should have been counted as a touchdown.
Patrick Mahomes Backs Their Misunderstanding
The controversy, however, did not only catch the eyes of college football fans but it did reach the highest echelons of the NFL.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes then took to social media to post his shock over the ruling.
“Lolol no idea what happened in this game”
Mahomes posted on Twitter as he expressed his confusion on how such a critical call could be overturned. Mahomes’ reaction did show the sentiments of many who watched the game, raising even more debate on this play.
A Replay Review That Divided Opinion
A call to overturn the game-winning score by Virginia Tech has been widely discussed throughout the football world, and knowledgeable fans and analysts alike have weighed in. Former players, analysts, and commentators gave their opinions, which were at least partially divided. Some said that officials did the right thing based on the video evidence, while others felt they committed an unjust wrong because of the play’s significance.
The controversy also spoke to an increasingly anguished concern about the role replay reviews play in critical moments of the game, especially in such close showdowns.
Loss of the game: It was a gut-wrenching blow for the Hokies fans and a respite to Miami fans: whose team narrowly escaped such an embarrassing defeat.
A Broader Discussion About Officiating in Football
The Virginia Tech-Miami case reminds us of how the review officials must walk thin lines. Decisions on the field by players in such critical moments often leave impressions that last a lifetime. Even though the touchdown was overturned, one gets the impression that it added more to the game, taking the broader issues of officiating into sports forward.
For Mahomes, or any seasoned NFL quarterback, sitting on the sidelines while that questionable call is overturned will prove to be just one of those nuisances reminding him and all the great players in the world with him of how totally inevitable this game can be sometimes when it comes down to one call.
When Calls Shape the Game
For weeks to come, the overturned touchdown will be hotly debated. Virginia Tech’s near-victory now undone by a replay decision, the emotions from the game themselves, which were swollen by reactions even from players like Patrick Mahomes, were shown to be just how wide the impact of a single officiating call can spread.
It is such moments as these that remind each of us, whether we line up to run the plays or sit back at home and watch-just how fast the game can turn and how much can hang in the balance of interpretation.
